Cloudy Skid Marks Recipe

The guys over at Penny Arcade mentioned a s’mores snack mix and I wanted to make a gluten free version.  I’ve tried several concoctions now and none are bad but this one will get you on your way to your own perfect mix.  Please let me know in the comments below of any other magical combos the rest of us should try.

Evenly spread 3 cups of Rice or Corn Chex cereal in pan.  Once you’ve tried this recipe, you might choose to up the sweetness even more by dusting the pan with powdered sugar before putting in the Chex.  This will help prevent any melted marshmallow from sticking to the foil.  I’ve never tried this myself, but if you do, please let me know if you like that additional sugar.

Get 3 cups of mini marshmallows.

Spread evenly in pan.  Place in oven on top rack.  Broil until marshmallows are golden brown.  This will happen very quickly.  No need to preheat the oven.  Watch marshmallows the entire time they cook.

Remove from oven and immediately press popcorn into marshmallows taking care of any hot edges of the pan.  An adult should do this step.  Allow pan to cool after this if children are involved (It won’t take too long).

Melt 4 oz of white chocolate in a microwave set to cook 1 minute at 50% power.  Stir white chocolate until smooth.  Recommend using melting wafers [pictured above].  In our taste test, they are a better flavor for this recipe than white chocolate morsels.

Quickly drizzle white chocolate on popcorn in a zig zag pattern.  This will begin to lock the lower layers together.

Melt 4 oz of dark or bittersweet chocolate in a microwave set to cook 1 minute at 50% power.  Stir.  An additional 15 to 30 seconds at 50% power may be required but choose to stir longer rather than microwave more when possible.  It is easy to overcook chocolate ruining the structure and flavor of it.

Quickly drizzle dark chocolate on white chocolate zig zagging in the opposite direction of the white chocolate.

Melt 4 oz of dark chocolate and drizzle in the opposite direction of the dark chocolate layer below.  NOTE:  This step can be omitted if you don’t like a strong chocolate flavor and you are a person of bad taste.

Melt 4 oz of semi-sweet chocolate and drizzle in opposite direction of dark chocolate layer below.  NOTE:  Milk chocolate is pictured, but semi-sweet chocolate melts and tastes better.  If you have milk chocolate, please try it though.  It ain’t bad this way.

Behold your snack time splendor!  Let it cool in the refrigerator for about 45 minutes or it will be a gooey mess.  Once set, break into bite-size pieces and devour.  NOTE:  Pictured with milk chocolate on top instead of semi-sweet.  Notice the big globs of milk chocolate.  It just doesn’t seem to melt and flow as easily.  Also, semi-sweet tastes better in this application.

  1. This snack is 100% Maugrim approved. Also, I appreciate the poopstain tag this post has. I hope all the people out there searching for poopstain mistakenly happen upon this delicious treat. And then maybe either go to therapy or graduate 8th grade.
